The Signs and Symptoms

Esophageal cancer, as suggests the name, starts in the esophagus of a person. Esophagus is a tube that runs from the end of the tongue, through the throat and all the way till the stomach.

Types Of Esophageal Cancer:-

Esophageal cancers are broadly divided into two types. The growth of the cancer cells in begin in cells in the inner lining of the esophagus. These cancers are diagnosed and treated or controlled in similar fashion.

Adenocarcinoma of the esophagus:

This type is usually found in the lower part of the esophagus, near the stomach, adenocarcinoma is the most common type of esophageal cancer. The number of cases has been increasing since the 1970s.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus:

This cancer is usually found in the upper part of the esophagus. The number of cases of this type of cancer has seen a significant decrease.

Risk Factors

The following are said to be the Possible Risk Factors for Rectal Cancer:

Age:

Age is considered the main risk factor for esophageal cancer. The chances of developing this cancer go up as a person gets older. In developed countries, most people are 65 years of age or older when they are diagnosed with esophageal cancer.

Gender:

Men are three times more likely to develop esophageal cancer as compared to women.

Smoking:

People who smoke are more likely to develop esophageal cancer than people who don’t smoke

Heavy drinking:

People who tend to have alcoholic drinks daily are more likely to develop squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus than people who don’t drink.

Diet:

People who consume a diet that lacks fruits and vegetables on a daily basis are more likely to have esophageal cancer. However, more research is needed to understand the relation of esophageal cancer with diet.

Obesity:

Being obese increases the risk of adenocarcinoma of the esophagus.

Acid reflux:

Acid reflux is the unusual flow of stomach acid into the esophagus. The stomach acid may harm the tissue of the esophagus, leading to adenocarcinoma of the esophagus in some people.

Barrett esophagus:

Acid reflux may damage the esophagus and over time cause a condition known as Barrett esophagus. The presence of Barrett esophagus increases the risk of adenocarcinoma of the esophagus.

All these risk factors do not necessarily mean that the person will develop cancer of the esophagus. In fact, most people showing these risk factors never develop esophageal cancer in their lives.

Symptoms Of Esophageal Cancer

Early esophageal cancer may not cause symptoms. As the cancer grows, the most common symptoms are:

  • 1. Food gets stuck in the esophagus, and food may come back up
  • 2. Pain when swallowing
  • 3. Pain in the chest or back
  • 4. Weight loss
  • 5. Heartburn
  • 6. A hoarse voice or cough that doesn’t go away within 2 weeksSpread the awareness about these signs and symptoms so that you might help someone who might be diagnosed with this cancer.Esophagus is a long hollow tube running from the end of your tongue to the stomach through your throat. It’s the part of the body that is responsible for helping food you swallow to reach your stomach. When cancer occurs in this tube it is called as esophageal cancer.

    Diagnosis Of Esophageal Cancer

If you show symptom that indicate the possibility of esophageal cancer, a visit to a doctor will help you a lot. He will examine the signs tell you the exact reason for those signs and if at all you have this cancer.

Some methods used for the diagnosis are:

    Barium swallow:

After you drink a barium solution, you have x-rays taken of your esophagus and stomach. The barium solution makes your esophagus show up more clearly on the x-rays. This test is also called an upper GI series.

  • For example, radiation therapy and chemotherapy may be given before or after surgery. The treatment that’s right for you depends mainly on the following:

    Surgery

Esophageal cancer can be treated with several types of surgery depending on the location of the cancer. Usually, the section of the esophagus with the cancer, lymph nodes, and part of the stomach is removed.

During surgery, the surgeon may place a feeding tube into your small intestine. This tube helps you get enough nutrition while you heal is called feeding Jejunostomy. The time it takes to heal after surgery is different for everyone and depends on the type of surgery. You may be in the hospital for at least one week.

    Radiation Therapy

Doctors use two types of radiation therapy to treat esophageal cancer. Some people receive both types

External radiation therapy: The radiation comes from a large machine outside the body. The machine aims radiation at your cancer.. Treatments are usually 5 days a week for several weeks. New advanced technologies like image guided radiotherapy (IGRT) are now available which delivers radiation to the target tumor sparing normal surrounding organs.

Internal radiation therapy Brachytherapy: The doctor numbs your throat with an anesthetic spray and puts a tube into your esophagus so that it can be used to give radiation

    Chemotherapy

Most people with esophageal cancer get chemotherapy. Chemotherapy uses drugs to destroy cancer cells. The drugs for esophageal cancer are usually given through a vein (intravenous).

Chemotherapy is usually given in cycles. Each cycle has a treatment period followed by a rest period.

Cancer takes a lot of lives in a year. More than any other disease. It’s important that we spread awareness about these cancers about these cancers so that the we could help decrease the number of deaths that it causes and make this world a better place.

    Endoscopy:

The doctor uses a thin, lighted tube (endoscope) to look down your esophagus. The doctor first numbs your throat with an anesthetic spray, and you may also receive medicine to help you relax. The tube is passed through your mouth or nose to the esophagus. The doctor may also call this procedure upper endoscopy, EGD, or esophagoscopy.

    Biopsy:

Usually, cancer begins in the inner layer of the esophagus. The doctor uses an endoscope to remove tissue from the esophagus. A pathologist checks the tissue under a microscope for cancer cells. A biopsy is the only sure way to know if cancer cells are present.

    Esophageal Cancer Treatment

People with esophageal cancer have several treatment options.

The options are surgery, radiation therapy chemotherapy or a combination of these treatments.

Do You Know the Signs of Head and Neck Cancers? Find Out Here

Cancers that begin at the inside walls of the mouth or the neck are known as Cancers of the head and neck. Salivary glands contain a lot of cells which could become cancerous and cause certain salivary gland cancers. These are also classified under the cancers of the head and neck.

These cancers develop in different areas in the head and are sometimes classified as such. Some of those areas are explained below:

Oral

These cancers can develop in the visible insides of the mouth. They  could begin at the gums or at the tip of the tongue. They can also begin on the interior walls of the cheek or at the end of the jaws, where gums meet the cheek bones.

They can also be found at the top surface of the mouth, the upper jaw or at the bottom of the mouth, under the tongue. Lips are also a place where it might show up.

Pharynx

This hollow tube that starts from the end of nose that essentially functions as the pathway of air for the process of respiration. The cancer could begin and spread on the walls of the pharynx leading to throat cancer.

Larynx

Larynx is small tube just beneath the pharynx. Also, called as the voicebox, larynx is responsible for our speech. It contains the vocal cord which vibrate to produce the sound, our voice. It also has small piece of tissue called epiglottis which acts as a valve to stop foor from entering the respiratory tract. Cancers can begin here too.

Paranasal sinuses

The small pockets of space inside the bones of the nose are known paranasal sinuses where sinus cancer begins.

Nasal cavity

The hollow space inside the nose is known as the nasal cavity. There are moist mucous surfaces here as like the rest of the inside walls and risks of the cancer developing stays.

Salivary Glands

Salivary glands are glands that are responsible for producing saliva, which helps with the digestion of food. These glands are found at the bottom of the mouth near jaw bones.

If you have questions like how these cancers are caused and how you can avoid the risks of developing these cancers please feel free to ask Dr Vijay Anand Reddy questions on the links here, https://www.facebook.com/drvijayanandreddy/

Symptoms and signs of the head and neck cancers

The symptoms of head and neck cancers may include a lump or a sore that does not heal, a sore throat that does not go away, difficulty in swallowing, and a change or hoarseness in the voice.

There are different signs and symptoms of the different cancers of the head and the neck and depends mostly on the areas affected, discussed in the previous subhead. All the symptoms that could be noticed by the patients is segregated as per the area of action for the convenience of understanding.

Oral Cavity: A white or Red patch on the gums, tongue or the inside lining of the cheeks. It may also cause swelling of gums making it very uncomfortable and also, unusual bleeding of the gums.

Pharynx : Trouble in breathing and speaking, also problem during swallowing, pain in the neck or the throat that wouldn’t go away. Problem in hearing and pain in the ears. Frequent ringing in ears.

Larynx : pain when swallowing food or ear pain.

Paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity. Sinuses that are blocked and do not clear; chronic sinus infections that do not respond to treatment with antibiotics; bleeding through the nose; frequent headaches, swelling or other trouble with the eyes; pain in the upper teeth; or problems with dentures.

Salivary glands. Swelling under the chin or around the jawbone, numbness or paralysis of the muscles in the face, or pain in the face, the chin, or the neck that does not go away.

If you see any of these symptoms in yourself or someone you love doesn’t necessarily mean you have any of these cancers. It could be signs of some other not so dangerous condition. But it is always a good idea to get yourself checked by a doctor frequently.

Cancer diagnosis has never been this easy and convenient and one of the best oncologist in Hyderabad, Dr Vijay Anand Reddy makes it very easy for patients to go through this procedures.

So if you are planning a visit to Dr Vijay Anand Reddy, you know where to find him. In case you don’t, here’s the address : https://goo.gl/maps/7j1Le4S9Jd82

Here’s What You Need to Know About Multiple Myeloma Cancer

As in any other cancer, Multiple Myeloma cancer is caused by an excessive multiplication of cells. In this particular cancer, however, it due to the multiplication of a kind of white blood cells called plasma.

White blood cells are the soldiers of our body that fights infection but when they multiply unusually and without control. The excessive protein formed enters the bones and blood. They get accumulated in the entire body and causes damage to the organs.

These growing plasma cells also horde the common healthy cells and trigger other cells to dissolve the bones. These dissolved parts of the bones, which become weak, are called lytic lesions.

When the overgrowth of these plasma cells continue, there comes a point when they reach out of the bone marrow and spread to more parts of the body, causing further organ damage.

Risk Factors

There are increased risks of developing Multiple Myeloma Cancer if you are more than 65 years of age or has a family member who already has it.

Relatively, Men are at a slightly greater risk of developing Multiple Myeloma than women. Also, people who are obese also possess a greater risk of developing it as compared to their thinner counterparts.

People with some plasma diseases also have a greater risk of developing Multiple Myeloma Cancer like Monoclonal Gammopathy of undetermined significance or Solitary Plasmacytoma.

Multiple Myeloma Symptoms

It is always wise to be able to recognise a disease, especially cancer, before hand. So, here are the Multiple Myeloma Symptoms you should be aware of.

Low blood counts : Overgrowth of Plasma cells crowd the normal healthy cells.

It will cause,

  1. Anaemia, if the number of red blood cells decrease which causes weakness in the body, inability to exercise properly and shortness of breath and dizziness.
  2. Leukopenia, if the number of white blood cells decrease which causes a reduced immunity against infections.
  3. Thrombocytopenia, if the number of blood platelets decreases which causes heavy bleeding even for a small cut or bruise.

Bone and Calcium problems : The older bone cells dissolve faster than the new ones that are being created, thus making the bones weaker.

It will cause,

  1. Pain in the bones, most probably in the back, hips or skull.
  2. Weakened bones, either at the location of the cancer or throughout.
  3. Fractures due to a little pressure or stress.

Infections : The plasma can no longer fight bacteria due to Multiple Myeloma, hence the infections can be more frequent.

Kidney Problems : The unhealthy plasma cells can cause serious damage to the kidneys and may lead to kidney failure too.

The failing kidneys could be identified by the following symptoms:

  1. Weakness
  2. Shortness of breath
  3. Itching
  4. Leg Swelling

Light Chain Amyloidosis : Antibodies are made of light chains and abnormal plasma can overgrow these light chains in the tissues. This leads to enlargement of organs causing them not to function properly.

The symptoms in this condition is similar to Multiple Myeloma symptoms but it also has the following signs:

  1. Irregular heartbeat due to an enlarged heart, which gets weaker.
  2. Enlarged Liver and Spleen which make the stomach to compress a little causing the patients to feel full.
  3. Enlarged tongue which can cause problems in swallowing and breathing.
  4. Skin colour or texture may change, easy bruises and bleeding.

Treatment

Once Multiple Myeloma is diagnosed, it is only wise that you seek the best oncologist in the city (i.e best cancer specialist).

An oncologist will then discuss all the treatment options that your case has. It could be something from the list below:

  1. Chemotherapy
  2. Bisphosphonates
  3. Radiation
  4. Surgery
  5. Stem cell transplant
  6. Plasmapheresis

Be sure of the treatment that you wish to take considering all the procedures of the treatments and possible side effects.

What You Need to Know About Colon Cancer?

Nikita was standing at the bus stop when she heard a little girl, “Mumma! Mumma!, Why is that aunty wearing a ribbon on her hand?” Nikita Smiled.

The little girl’s mother replied “How would I know?”, rather smugly.

Nikita touched the navy blue ribbon on her arm and took a deep breath. She went to the mother and told her, “you should know, it is for the awareness of colon cancer during the month of march”she smiled, “that’s the whole point of wearing these”

She turned to go. While walking she turned around a little, “I didn’t know” and “that’s why I couldn’t save my daughter”

Cancer kills, we all know that. But there is not one type of cancer. There are hundreds of cancers and are classified on the basis of the organ in which the cancer initially started.

Awareness of cancers can help reduce the number of deaths that happen due to these deadly diseases. Awareness could help people understand and identify the early symptoms in time to get proper treatment.

To help bring awareness to the common folk, every month a colour is dedicated to a particular cancer. It helps in reminding people of the risks and making a statement.

Colorectal or Colon cancer is one type of cancer that shows up in Colon cancer or lower parts of the large intestine.

What is colon cancer?

“Cancers of the colon and rectum (colorectal cancer) start when the process of the normal replacement of colon lining cells goes awry. Mistakes in cell division occur frequently. For reasons that are poorly understood, sometimes mistakes occur that escape our editing systems. When this occurs, these cells begin to divide independently of the normal checks and balances that control growth. As these abnormal cells grow and divide, they can lead to growths within the colon called polyps. Polyps vary in type, but many are precancerous tumors that grow slowly over the course of years and do not spread. As polyps grow, additional genetic mutations further destabilize the cells. When these precancerous tumors change direction (growing into the wall of the tube rather than into the space in the middle of it) and invade other layers of the large intestine (such as the submucosa or muscular layer), the precancerous polyp has become cancerous. In most cases this process is slow, taking at least eight to 10 years to develop from those early aberrant cells to a frank cancer. Colorectal cancer is typically an adenocarcinoma, a term that refers to a cancer that has formed in certain types of lining tissues in the body.”

It is among the most common cause of cancer and that’s why it is very important that we take a good look at the causes and symptoms of Colon Cancer to keep ourselves and others around us safe. Let’s begin, shall we?

What are the causes of colon cancer?

There could be varied reasons that could increase the risks of developing colon cancer. Here’s a few to get you started:

Increasing age: Getting older could be a risk factor for developing colon cancer as the immunity of the large intestines decreases relative to what it was when younger.

Genetic: Passing down of genetic mutations from parents has also been known to have a greater risk factor for developing colon cancer.

Colon Polyps: Polyps are unnatural growths of cells inside the colon. It could also lead to colon cancer. These colon polyps are very similar to the early growth of cancers and that’s why need to be regularly screened for cancer.

Diet: Foods that have high percentages of fat in them can increase the risks of colon cancer in people, as found by researchers who studied the diet patterns of countries that have higher percentages of people suffering from colon cancer.

Ulcerative Colitis: Long standing ulcerative colitis (inflammation of the large intestine) can also increase the risks of colon cancer. So it’s better to treat it at the earliest.

What are the symptoms?

The person suffering from colon cancer may experience a few or all the symptoms that are mentioned below. However, it should be noted that some symptoms, like blood in stool, are similar to other medical conditions like irritable bowel syndrome.

So, it’s always better to consult the best oncologist rather than deciding from the symptoms you experience that it is cancer that you are suffering from.

Fatigue or Weakness: A feeling of exhaustion for longer periods of time with shortness of breaths.

Change in bowel habits: Since, this cancer develops in the large intestine, it is only natural that it will affect your bowel habits. So keep it in check.

Narrow stools: When your stool is long and thin, and frequently, you might want to see the best oncologist you know.

Diarrhea or Constipation: Colon Cancer can cause colon to behave unnaturally meaning that it can cause diarrhea as well as constipation. However, it can also be temporary and harmless, so nothing to worry until the oncologists says so.

Red or Dark blood in stool: Dark blood in stool is a sign that you need to see a doctor, however, its just to be on the safe side.

Weight loss: As with many cancers, weight loss is also a symptom. When your weight reduces unnaturally then you might want to check with your doctor.

Abdominal pain: Abdominal pain or cramps are also a symptom of colon cancer. So is the bloating of the tummy.

If you see these symptoms in you or someone you love, consult the best oncologist in India here :

Uplifting Launch of Dr. Vijay Anand Reddy’s I Am A Survivor

August 24th, 2017 saw the release of an invaluable source of hope and inspiration for cancer patients everywhere – the book I Am A Survivor, written by Dr. Vijay Anand Reddy. The victorious, hopeful note struck by the book was felt by all who attended the event. The event honoured Dr. Reddy, who is responsible for the survivors’ inspiring recoveries, and also highlighted the survivors who shared their stories.

Seven-year-old Rehan kicked off the evening with a touching rendition of the song Lag Jaa Gale. Professor of English Ajanta Sircar grew emotional as she recounted learning that it’s not how much life we have that counts, it’s how we live the life we have. Dr. Reddy, who Professor Sircar credited with this teaching, followed the professor back into the audience and only returned to the stage after calming her. It was a moment that would deeply touch everyone present, including special guest V.V.S. Laxman, who pointed out that the exchange displayed a quality essential in good doctors – empathy. Each of the survivors shared tales that spotlighted Dr. Reddy’s years of experience and expertise along with his personal care and attention in acknowledging, addressing, and comforting his patients’ fears.

All the highly distinguished special guests, including Chief Guest Ms. Kavitha, MP, stressed proactive early detection because there is an 80% cure rate of cancers detected at stages I and II. Guests especially recognized Dr. Reddy’s extraordinary and continuing dedication to his patients. The most inspiring and uplifting words, however, were from Dr. Reddy himself. Cancer, he asserts, “cannot shatter hope! It cannot corrode faith! It cannot silence courage! It cannot cripple love! It cannot steal eternal life! It cannot conquer the spirit!”

Ending with a celebratory survivors’ cake-cutting, the launch of Dr. Vijay Anand Reddy’s I Am A Survivor was a wonderful, heart-warming event. The book promises to be similarly nourishing to the soul.

A Revolution in the Fight Against CANCER

Cancer is a feared disease. A diagnosis of cancer or even a suspicion of cancer causes fear and paranoia. Though many other diseases have worse outcome than most cases of cancer, cancer is the subject of widespread fear and taboo. The main reason for this is the assumption that cancer is not curable and Cancer treatment is very painful!

However, with the latest innovations in cancer care, cure for most of the cancers is now a reality. One of many such innovative techniques is TomoTherapy. The TomoTherapy® treatment system is the only radiation therapy system designed on a CT scanner foundation. The system looks like a CT scanner because it is one!

What is TomoTherapy?

The TomoTherapy system is a pioneering radiation therapy platform that enables precise cancer treatment by tightly conforming the radiation dose delivered to the shape of the tumor. Combined with the option of innovative, TomoHelical TM and TomoDirect TM radiation delivery, the all-in- one system results in more control and greater accuracy in treating a wide variety of cancers.

TomoTherapy is a form of computed tomography (CT) guided intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). Daily low-dose CT imaging helps physicians know that radiation will reach the tumor as planned, and that exposure to healthy tissue will be minimized along the way. And, these daily images can be used to monitor and maintain the prescribed treatment during each and every treatment session.

Advantage of TomoTherapy

TomoTherapy Radiation can deliver highest doses to the tumor while restricting the dose to the normal tissue below critical levels. In this respect, it is far superior to any other present form of radiotherapy treatment.

Exact location of the tumour and normal structures is verified daily during the treatment with the help of a CT scan and therefore there is no chance of a wrong treatment.Tumours, whether they are large or small, one or many, can be treated in the same session.Because of daily CT scan imaging, radiation can be adapted in real time to conform to a shrinking tumour.

It is suitable for treating any cancer from head to toe with maximum clinical benefit and least side effects.

It is possible to treat very large fields as in case of Bone Marrow Transplant and whole body radiotherapy.

Recurrent cancers and simultaneous chemo-radiation can be treated safely due to less toxicity

Treatable cancers with the help of TomoTherapy

The TomoTherapy treatment system handles clinical indications of any complexity, from simple to large, and from head to toe. Hundreds and thousands of patients around the world have been treated on a TomoTherapy system. Some of the cancers treated with TomoTherapy system are:

tomo

Breast Cancer

TomoTherapy® treatment system helps in the treatment of breast cancer by concentrating on the breast tissue while avoiding the surrounding vital organs like heart and lung. It delivers an uniform dose in the breast, thus reduces skin reaction and breast fibrosis.

Prostate Cancer

TomoHelical delivery allows treatment of the prostate and lymph nodes while helping to avoid the bladder. The high dose is contained within the tumor while minimizing dose to the Rectum and Bladder.

Lung Cancer

Treatment of the tumor with a rapid falloff of dose to limit exposure to healthy lung tissue, while helping to avoid dose to the heart, mediastinum and spinal cord.

Rectal Cancer

Required doses of radiation is delivered to the rectal cancer while sparing normal tissue and small bowel and thus reducing toxicity.

Brain Tumors

Whole brain radiation with simultaneous integrated boost (SIB) thus preserving cognitive functions of the brain.

Head and Neck Cancers

TomoTherapy is ideal for treating head and neck cancers as it can deliver very high doses to the tumor and the nodes even when they are situated very close to salivary glands, spine, swallowing organs etc without causing any damage to them.

Gynecological cancers

Cancers of cervix and endometrium can be treated effectively without causing any damage to the sensitive areas like rectum and bladder.

Paediatric tumors

In children, it is most important to reduce unnecessary radiation to the normal structures. No other radiotherapy technology can compete with tomotherapy in minimizing normal structure dose, therefore it is the ideal equipment for treating cancers in Children.

CRANIO-Spinal Radiotherapy

TomoHelical delivery allows treatment from the brain to the entire Spinal Cord with great ease and with excellent dose conformity to the target. TomoTherapy delivers radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer as prescribed by a Radiation Oncologist. Oncologists have treated many types of cancers with the TomoTherapy system, ranging from routine to most complex. Many patients who have undergone the treatment reported reduced side effects as compared to the conventional forms of radiation therapy. The universal use of TomoTherapy for all different challenges in modal radiation oncology represents a new treatment option for very high conformal radiotherapy.

Psychological Stress & Cancer!

There are several times people wonder if their attitude—positive or negative—determine their risk of,or likely recovery from, cancer? Before we answer this question, let’s study the relationship between the two.

Can psychological stress cause cancer?

Although stress can cause a number of physical health problems, the evidence that it can cause cancer is weak. Some studies have indicated a link between various psychological factors and an increased risk of developing cancer, but others have not.

Apparent links between psychological stress and cancer could arise in several indirect ways. For example, people under stress may develop certain behaviors, such as smoking, overeating, or drinking alcohol, which increase a person’s risk for cancer.

How does psychological stress affect people who have cancer?

People who have cancer may find the physical, emotional, and social effects of the disease to be stressful. Those who attempt to manage their stress with risky behaviors such as smoking or drinking alcohol or who become more sedentary may have a poorer quality of life after cancer treatment. In contrast, people who are able to use effective coping strategies to deal with stress, such as relaxation and stress management techniques, have been shown to have lower levels of depression, anxiety, and symptoms related to the cancer and its treatment. However, there is no evidence that successful management of psychological stress improves cancer survival.

How can people who have cancer learn to cope with psychological stress?

Emotional and social support can help patients learn to cope with psychological stress. Such support can reduce levels of depression, anxiety, and disease- and treatment-related symptoms among patients.

Approaches can include the following:

Training in relaxation, meditation, or stress management
Counseling or talk therapy
Cancer education sessions
Social support in a group setting
Medications for depression or anxiety
Exercise
Patients who show moderate to severe distress are typically referred to appropriate resources, such as a clinical health psychologist, social worker, chaplain, or psychiatrist.

To answer the first question asked at the beginning of this article, after analyzing the facts. It can be concluded that to date, there is no convincing scientific evidence that links a person’s “attitude” to his or her risk of developing or dying from cancer. If you have cancer, it’s normal to feel sad, angry, or discouraged sometimes and positive or upbeat at other times. People with a positive attitude may be more likely to maintain social connections and stay active, and physical activity and emotional support may help you cope with your cancer.

Skin Cancer – FAQs and more

Is it true that only people with light skin get skin cancer?

No. Anyone can get skin cancer. It’s more common among people with a light (fair) skin tone, but skin cancer can affect anyone. Skin cancer can affect both men and women. Even teenagers and, rarely, younger children can develop skin cancer.

How can people with dark skin get skin cancer?

Although dark skin does not burn in the sun as easily as fair skin, everyone is at risk for skin cancer. Even people who don’t burn are at risk for skin cancer. It doesn’t matter whether you consider your skin light, dark, or somewhere in between. You are at risk for skin cancer. Being in the sun can damage your skin. Moreover, the sun isn’t the only cause of skin cancer. There are other causes. That’s why skin cancer may be found in places on the body never exposed to the sun.

How can I find skin cancer early?

  • Talk with your doctor if you see any changes on your skin that do not go away within one month.
  • Check the skin on all surfaces of your body, even in your mouth.
  • Watch for a new mole or other new growth on your skin.
  • Check for changes in the appearance of an old growth on the skin or scar (especially a burn scar).
  • Watch for a patch of skin that is a different color and becomes darker or changes color.
  • Watch for a sore that does not heal – it may bleed or form a crust.
  • Check your nails for a dark band. Check with your doctor if you see changes, such as if the dark band begins to spread.

When skin cancer is found early, it can be treated more easily. If you notice a change on your skin, see your doctor. Don’t wait until the change looks like the more advanced skin cancers.

How can I protect myself from skin cancer?

Have your doctor check your skin if you are concerned about a change. Your doctor may take a sample of your skin to check for cancer cells.

Ask your doctor about your risk of skin cancer:

  • Some skin conditions and certain medicines (such as some antibiotics or hormones) may make your skin more sensitive to damage from the sun.
  • Medicines or medical conditions (such as HIV) that suppress the immune system may make you more likely to develop skin cancer.
  • Having scars or skin ulcers increases your risk.
  • Exposure to a high level of arsenic (a poison that is sometimes found in well water or pesticides) increases your risk.

Stay out of the sun as much as you can. Whenever possible, avoid exposure to the sun from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you do happen to be under the sun between these hours:

  • Try to wear long sleeves, long pants, and a hat that shades your face, ears, and neck with a brim all around.
  • Use sunscreen with a label that says it is broad spectrum or is at least SPF 15 and can filter both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Wear sunglasses that filter UV to protect your eyes and the skin around your eyes.

If you are concerned about having a low level of vitamin D from not being in the sun, talk with your doctor about supplements.

Don’t use tanning beds, tanning booths, or sunlamps.

8 Common Cancer Myths Exposed

The internet or the World Wide Web is a large community and a lot of information on there or even otherwise does not necessarily have a substantial credibility. Certain popular ideas about how cancer starts and spreads—though scientifically wrong—can seem to make sense, especially when those ideas are rooted in old theories. But wrong ideas about cancer can lead to needless worry and even hinder good prevention and treatment decisions. Do not believe everything you hear unless your oncologist seconds so. Listed below are a few common misconceptions about cancer that one must remember.

1.People with cancer should “rest” as much as possible. While adequate rest is definitely necessary to stay healthy, experts advise against isolation and inactivity, which can lead to increased fatigue, a weakened immune system, and depression. Patients who exercise consistently have a higher rate of survival and maintain a more positive outlook throughout their recovery.

2. Alcohol is good for the health. While a glass of red wine has proven beneficial to heart health, alcohol causes inflammation. A state of chronic inflammation has been linked to cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and many neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

3. Cell phones cause cancer. No, not according to the best studies completed so far. Cancer is caused by genetic mutations, and cell phones emit a type of low-frequency energy that does not damage genes.

4. Obesity doesn’t increase risk of cancer. With a large majority in the whole population considered overweight or obese, this is an incredibly dangerous myth. Experts agree that hundreds of cancer cases are directly caused by carrying excess weight. One primary reason is that fat cells secrete estradiol which acts as a “fertilizer” for cancer cells.

5. Cancer gets worse if exposed to air. Not true at all. Exposure to air will not make tumors grow faster or cause cancer to spread to other parts of the body.

6. Superfoods prevent cancer. Blueberries, beetroot, broccoli, garlic, green tea… the list goes on. Despite thousands of websites claiming otherwise, there’s no such thing as a ‘superfood’. It’s a marketing term used to sell products and has no scientific basis.

7. The food you eat doesn’t prevent cancer or fight it. Foods high in refined sugar, refined sodium, and unhealthy fats have been shown in countless studies to influence cellular mutation  that leads to cancer. Cancer cells consume more sugar (glucose) for fuel than any other cell in your body. Conversely, eating a diet of organic foods with vitamins and nutrients that prevent cellular deterioration naturally increases your chance of preventing and beating this devastating disease (and many others).

8. Cancer is genetic so nothing can prevent whether or not you are diagnosed. This is one of the biggest myths because experts estimate that more than half of cancer diagnoses can be prevented. Less than 5% of all cancers have a genetic link. A vast majority of cancers are caused by environmental toxicity.

Deadliest Foods in Your Kitchen

What if you were told that there was something you could do right now to cut your cancer risk in half? That’s right, in half!

Experts estimate that more than half the cases of cancer are preventable with lifestyle changes. With over half of cancers being avoidable, it seemed that a closer look is needed to be taken at what we are subjecting out bodies to that might me at the root of the cancer epidemic. The function of your body that processes the food you eat, distributes it around your body as needed, and does its best to dump the leftover toxins. The food and beverages you consume, the fuel your body uses to fight disease, is critical to your overall wellbeing.

Some foods are worse for you than others and are increasing your risk of many conditions and diseases. While cancer is one of the worst, regularly eating the cancer causing foods from this list can also lead to heart disease, diabetes, chronic inflammation, and so much more.

1. Microwave Popcorn

There are more than just kernels in most microwave popcorn. It contains PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) which is a likely carcinogenic. Its artificial butter contains another dangerous chemical that can damage the lungs when inhaled. From the chemically-lined bag to the actual contents, microwave popcorn is at the center of lung cancer debates around the world. To reduce your risk of exposure to these chemicals, make your popcorn the old fashioned way and add your own flavoring instead – it tastes better, doesn’t release toxic fumes, and is a healthier choice for you.

2. Processed Meats

Salted, pickled and smoked foods so to say. These products typically contain preservatives, such as nitrates, which are intended to prolong shelf life. The additives used in processed foods can  accumulate in your body over time. Eventually, such toxins cause damage at the cellular level and lead to diseases like cancer. Bacon, lunch meat, hot dogs, sausages, and other processed meats have been shown to increase the risk of pancreatic cancer by 67%.

3. Refined White Flour

When flour is refined, all nutritional value is removed. Then it’s bleached with chlorine gas to make it more appealing to consumers. Bleached food doesn’t sound like a good thing, because it isn’t. Traces of the chemicals remain in the food. Also, highly processed flours also have a high carbohydrate content which upset the blood sugar balance inside our body and leads to a higher production of insulin and thus feeds cancer cells.Avoid carbohydrates that are highly processed such as white bread, white pasta, white rice, soda & concentrated fruit juices to avoid this reaction in your body.

4. “Diet” Foods

If you see buzz words like “diet”, “low-fat”, “fat-free”, or ‘sugar-free” then those missing items are likely to be replaced with chemicals. Diet foods are loaded with artificial sweeteners, artificial colors and flavors, and more.Several of these chemicals are found to be carcinogenic in many incidents.

5. Soda and Carbonated Beverages

Sodas have been at the center of the health debate for two decades as a major cancer causing food. Filled with high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS),dyes, and a host of other chemicals, they are very bad for every aspect of your health. They provide zero nutritional value and rob your body of the nutrients you get from other foods.

6. Canned Goods

Most cans are lined with a product called bisphenol-A (BPA), which has been shown to genetically alter the brain cells of rats. Many plastic goods, thermal paper, water lines, and many dental composites also contain BPA.Stick to fresh or frozen vegetables that have no added ingredients

7. Hydrogenated Oils

Vegetable oils are chemically extracted from their source, chemically treated, and more chemicals are added to change the smell and taste. They’re packed with unhealthy omega-6 fats and have been proven to alter the structure of our cell membranes. Also, hydrogenated oils, like vegetable oil, contain Trans fats. Trans fat is considered to be the worst type of fat there is. It’s known to cause cancer, heart disease, and immune system problems.

8. French Fries/Potato Chips

These fast food staples are fried in hydrogenated vegetable oil and then heavily salted. We’ve already discussed the dangers of hydrogenated oils, but the high salt content is also concerning. It increases the risk of high blood pressure as well as other health problems. In addition, foods heated above a certain temperature have high levels of acrylamide. Acrylamide is found in cigarette smoke and industrial building materials, as well some foods. Both french fries and potato chips were found to have higher levels of this chemical that studies have shown increase the risk of cancer. Not only will eliminating these foods lower your cancer risk, you’re going to feel better from the inside out. Now that you know what the top cancer causing foods are, get rid of these deadly substances immediately and stick to eating organic food. For everything else, you can visit your oncologist who will give you more tips on how to stay healthy and cancer free.

It runs in the Family: The risks of hereditary cancer and how to prevent it

All cancers are caused by changes to materials in our bodies called “genes.” These are units of information in every cell of our bodies. Genes tell our bodies which proteins to make based on the type of cell and its needs. When genes themselves are damaged, they can develop changes called “mutations.” When mutations occur in the damage-controlling genes, cells can grow out of control and cause cancer.

While for most people who develop cancer, the cancer-causing gene mutations happen over the course of a lifetime. Some people are born with a gene mutation that they inherited from their mother or father. This damaged gene puts them at higher risk for cancer. When cancer occurs because of an inherited gene mutation, it is referred to as “hereditary cancer”.

So it basically comes down to 3 questions:

If someone in my family has cancer, am I likely to get cancer, too?

Not necessarily. Only about 5 to 10 percent of cancers are caused by harmful mutations that are inherited. In families with an inherited cancer-causing mutation, multiple family members will often develop the same type of cancer. The remaining 90 to 95 percent of cancers are caused by mutations that happen during a person’s lifetime as a natural result of aging and exposure to environmental factors, such as tobacco smoke and radiation. These cancers are called “non-hereditary” or “spontaneous” cancers.

If no one in my family has had cancer, does that mean I’m risk-free?

No. Most cancers are caused by genetic changes that occur throughout a person’s lifetime as a natural result of aging and exposure to environmental factors, such as tobacco smoke and radiation. Other factors, such as what kind of food you eat, how much you eat, and whether you exercise, may also influence your risk of developing cancer.

Family cancer syndromes – when should I worry?

When many cases of cancer occur in a family, it is most often due to chance or because family members have been exposed to a common toxin for example tobacco. Less often, these cancers may be caused by an inherited gene mutation causing a family cancer syndrome.

Certain symptoms indicate the family cancer syndrome, such as

  • Many cases of an uncommon or rare type of cancer (like kidney cancer)
  • Cancers occurring at younger ages than usual (like colon cancer in a 20 year old)
  • More than one type of cancer in a single person (like a woman with both breast and ovarian cancer)
  • Cancers occurring in both of a pair of organs (both eyes, both kidneys, both breasts)
  • More than one childhood cancer in a set of siblings (like sarcoma in both a brother and a sister)
  • Cancer occurring in the sex not usually affected (like breast cancer in a man)

Expert Advice:We recommend you to have regular health checkups regardless of whether Cancer runs in the family or not. While every individual is suggested to have a full physical exam once a year, women are required to take an extra mile and conduct a breast self-exam every month.

Does hair dye use increase the risk of cancer?

There is no convincing scientific evidence that personal hair dye use increases the risk of cancer. Some studies suggest, however, that hairdressers and barbers who are regularly exposed to large quantities of hair dye and other chemical products may have an increased risk of bladder cancer.

Why is there concern that hair dyes may cause cancer?

Many people all over the world use hair dyes. It is estimated that more than one-third of women over age 18 and about 10 percent of men over age 40 use some type of hair dye.

Over 5,000 different chemicals are used in hair dye products, some of which are reported to be carcinogenic (cancer-causing) in animals. Because so many people use hair dyes, scientists have tried to determine whether exposure to the chemicals in hair coloring products is associated with an increased risk of cancer in people.

Over the years, some epidemiologic (population) studies have found an increased risk of bladder cancer in hairdressers and barbers.  Although some studies have linked the personal use of hair dyes with increased risks of certain cancers of the blood and bone marrow, such as non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and leukemia, other studies have not shown such links. Studies of breast and bladder cancer have also produced conflicting results.

What do the scientists have to say?

There have been several conflicting results in various case studies. Some scientists believe that there was a change in the contents of hair dyes in the 1970’s and they are much safer now as the previous contents included cancer causing amines. For instance, they found that hair dye users had increased risks of both follicular lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma. For the most part, the increases were limited to women who began using hair dye before 1980, although an increased risk of follicular lymphoma was observed among women who began using dark-colored dyes after 1980. Along the same lines, some others believe that users of black permanent dyes, but not of other color dyes, did have an increased risk of leukemia.  Also, because studies have shown that professional hairdressers have an increased risk of bladder cancer that may be due to occupational exposure to hair dye, researchers will continue to study whether personal hair dye use is related to bladder cancer risk.

What is the final verdict?

No. Although there have been varying opinions, majority of the individuals and institutions working on this issue have concluded that personal use of hair dyes is “not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans”. Nevertheless, do not completely ignore the symptoms if any as there are always exceptions. Precaution is better than cure; take the right measures, visit your oncologist regularly and prevent cancer.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure – A few factors to prevent Cancer

Cancer is the #2 killer in developed countries and #1 in underdeveloped countries. Right now, due to poor lifestyle habits, poor diet, lack of information, the medical community’s refusal to embrace holistic therapies, and the exorbitant cost of  conventional cancer treatment; 35% of those who develop cancer do not survive the disease.

Know what you can do right now to lower your risk and prevent cancer from stealing your life or the life of someone you love. Know what you can do to fight this disease and win.

1. Pollution:

Environmental factors can increase your risk of cancer. The air you breathe, the water you drink, and the food you eat are all important. Pollution, heavy metal toxicity, and even personal care and ousehold cleaning products can damage the cells in your body. Your home and workplace are the two places you spend the majority of your time. Evaluating (and then reducing) the possible toxins you’re exposed to on a daily basis is a strong step to cancer prevention.

2. Obesity

Research has confirmed that obesity increases your risk of cancer as well as every  other major disease or condition. It can also affect your chances of survival should you be diagnosed. In one study of post-menopausal women with breast cancer, the survival rates were higher in women who maintained a healthy body weight.

3. Age

In economically developed countries, 58% of cancer diagnoses are in people 65 years of age or older. In developing countries, people over the age of 65, account for 40% of new cancer cases.

4. Sleep

This is a cancer fact that many don’t see coming. Sleep deprivation increases your risk of colon cancer. Recent studies also showed a higher risk of cancer among those who work night shift schedules. The benefit of healing sleep is one of the most underestimated ways to keep your body strong and cancer-free.

5. Smoking

More than 90% of all lung cancer cases are caused by smoking and 22% of all cancer deaths are due to lung cancer resulting from smoking. Tobacco product use is the most preventable cause of cancer worldwide.

6. Women

Breast, colorectal, lung & bronchus, cervical, and stomach cancer are the most common types worldwide for which women are diagnosed. Early detection increases breast cancer survival rates substantially.

7. Men

Lung & bronchus, prostate, colorectal, stomach, and liver are the most common types worldwide for which men are diagnosed.

The most important factor is – Detection

You may  experience no symptoms of ovarian cancer, lung cancer, or colon cancer until the cancer cells spread to other areas of your body. Early screening is imperative to catching these cancers in time.

Sometimes making the right choices for your body is hard. It can be easy to get into a rut of eating comfort foods, not exercising, and smoking. Good health and staying cancer free takes some discipline. What you eat, drink, and do with your body directly impacts your risk.

However, it is possible for you to get sick in spite of doing everything right. Therefore visit your oncologist regularly and keep learning about ways to prevent, fight, and conquer cancer.
